What to Wear to Dinner in Phuket: Dress Codes for 2026/27
Smart casual is what six of the eight Phuket venues we checked publish. Here is what each says on its own page, how beach clubs and Phuket Town differ, and what to pack for a November to February evening.
In short
As of 2 November 2026, six of the eight Phuket venues we checked state smart casual, one says casual and for one we found no dress code. Five of the eight name flip-flops, and the stricter rooms add beach sandals, sportswear and sleeveless attire for men. Bisou Phuket, a modern French restaurant and cocktail bar at No.4 Bandon-Cherngtalay Road in Cherngtalay, is smart casual with no flip-flops, open nightly from 6:00 PM with the bar running to 1:00 AM.
Book a table at BisouAs of 2 November 2026, smart casual is the dress code at six of the eight Phuket venues we checked (Saffron, Nitan, hom, La Sala, Black Ginger and Royd), and Bisou Phuket, a modern French restaurant and cocktail bar in Cherngtalay, is smart casual with no flip-flops. Phuket Expat Guide (published 21 April 2026) puts the island's norm in two short sentences: "Smart casual is the norm. No beach shorts, no flip-flops." Laguna Café, a resort café, says casual on its own page, and we found no dress code on the homepage or dining page of Catch Beach Club. We checked the booking or dining pages of the eight venues on 2 November 2026.
This guide says what each venue publishes, dated, because dress codes are policies and policies change. Where we found nothing, we say so and do not guess.
What is the dress code for dinner in Phuket?
The dress code for dinner in Phuket is, in most rooms, smart casual, which in practice means neat, covered and comfortable rather than formal. Phuket Expat Guide adds that a collared shirt or a smart dress is fine almost everywhere, and that only a handful of Phuket restaurants require formal wear. Phuket Insider, a local guide to the island's beach clubs, says that most beach clubs enforce a dress code in the evenings and suggests smart casual at least.
Most sources use "smart casual" without defining it, and the venues that do define it differ, so read the venue's own line. The next section gives eight.
What do Phuket restaurants actually publish?
Six of the eight venues we checked say smart casual, one says casual and for one we found no dress code. The wording below is from each venue's own booking or dining page as of 2 November 2026, except Saffron, whose page blocked our automated read: for Saffron we rely on a search summary of the page and on the listing named.
| Venue | Where | What its own page says |
|---|---|---|
| Saffron, Banyan Tree Phuket | Srisoonthorn Road, Cherngtalay | Smart casual (as summarised from its page; also listed as smart casual by En Primeur Club) |
| Nitan | Srisoonthorn Road, Thalang | Smart casual: "We do not allow flip flops." |
| Catch Beach Club | Bang Tao Beach | No dress code found on its homepage or dining page; Phuket 101 says the club does not publish one |
| Laguna Café, Dusit Thani Laguna Phuket | Laguna Phuket | Casual, on its own page |
| hom, InterContinental Phuket Resort | Kathu district | Smart casual; athletic or sportswear, slippers, beach sandals and flip-flops not permitted; men asked to avoid sleeveless attire and open-toed footwear; dress shorts welcome |
| La Sala, Anantara Mai Khao Phuket Villas | Mai Khao | On its own page: smart casual; covered shoes required; rubber flip-flops not allowed; shorts only in the outside area |
| Black Ginger, The Slate | Nai Yang Beach | On its own page: smart casual; dress shorts acceptable; no singlets, beachwear, sportswear, flip-flops or beach sandals; "entry may be declined" |
| Royd | Dibuk Road, Phuket Town | Smart casual; flip-flops and slippers "gently discouraged" |
Three things stand out. As of 2 November 2026, five of the eight name flip-flops (four do not allow them, Royd gently discourages them). The three longest lists are at resort restaurants. And the one casual room, Laguna Café, is a resort café, which is a reminder that the code belongs to the room, not to the resort's name.
Hom, Nitan and Royd are each also listed as smart casual on En Primeur Club, a third-party restaurant directory (hom, Nitan, Royd); the directory's hom page does not mention footwear.
What do beach clubs expect after sunset?
Beach clubs on Phuket are swimwear by day and smart casual by night, and Catch Beach Club, the one we checked, does not appear to publish a dress code. We found none on its homepage or dining page on 2 November 2026. Phuket 101's review of Catch (page updated 28 August 2026) says: "The club doesn't publish one." It adds that beachwear is normal in the daytime and that in the evening people dress smart casual, as at most Phuket beach clubs.
Phuket Insider gives the same pattern for beach clubs in general: swimwear in the daytime, and at night a stylish outfit or at least smart casual. Our guide to the best beach clubs in Phuket covers the beach clubs, and our guide to romantic restaurants in Bang Tao and Cherngtalay covers the evening rooms next door.
One practical point for a table going from a sunbed to dinner: change. Catch publishes no rule we could find, so bring a shirt or a smart top in your bag and change before dinner.
How do the resort rooms and Royd differ?
Among the eight venues we checked, the longest dress rules are at three resort restaurants (hom, La Sala and Black Ginger), while Royd, our only Phuket Town venue, words its flip-flop rule most gently. Hom bars athletic wear and beach sandals, La Sala requires covered shoes, and Black Ginger says on its own page that entry may be declined if the code is not followed. Royd on Dibuk Road asks for smart casual and says flip-flops and slippers are "gently discouraged to preserve the ambience of the dining room", a softer wording for the same idea. This is one Phuket Town example, and two other resort rooms, Saffron and Laguna Café, publish short lines.
Between them sit Nitan, an independent restaurant on Srisoonthorn Road that states its rule on its booking page, and Saffron at Banyan Tree. If you are staying in a Laguna resort and heading out, our guide to dinner outside your Laguna resort compares the options and the distances, and where to eat in Bang Tao and Cherngtalay maps the whole neighbourhood.
What should you not wear to dinner in Phuket?
Leave swimwear, beach cover-ups, flip-flops, beach sandals and sports kit at the hotel. Flip-flops are the item the venues above name most, and the others are named by at least one of them or by our own advice.
- Beachwear. Black Ginger lists beachwear as excluded, and Phuket Expat Guide rules out beach shorts. Swimwear is our advice: no venue above names it.
- Flip-flops. Not allowed at Nitan, hom, La Sala (rubber flip-flops) and Black Ginger, and gently discouraged, with slippers, at Royd.
- Beach sandals. Excluded by hom and Black Ginger.
- Sportswear and athletic wear. Excluded by hom and Black Ginger.
- Singlets and sleeveless attire. Black Ginger asks guests to refrain from singlets, and hom asks men to avoid sleeveless attire.
- Shorts. Not a blanket rule: Black Ginger and hom accept dress shorts, while La Sala allows shorts only in its outside area, so tailored shorts work in some rooms and not in others. Long trousers are the safe choice.
What works in every room on the list: a shirt, a polo or a smart top, trousers or a dress, and closed shoes (hom asks men to avoid open-toed footwear). If in doubt, ask when you book.
What should you pack for dinner in Phuket?
Pack one smart casual outfit per planned dinner, built from pieces that breathe. This is our advice; Phuket Expat Guide says a collared shirt or a smart dress is fine almost everywhere.
- A shirt or polo with trousers, or a dress, or a smart top with trousers or a skirt.
- Closed shoes, not beach sandals. La Sala requires covered shoes, and hom bars beach sandals and asks men to avoid open-toed footwear.
- A thin layer for the dining room, and a second pair of shoes for a wet walk from the car.
- Repellent, for the reasons in the weather section below.
For a celebration, smart casual is still our advice at Bisou. Phuket Expat Guide says only a handful of Phuket restaurants require formal wear, so check the booking page of any venue you are unsure about.
How do you check a restaurant's dress code before you go?
Read the booking or dining page, and ask when you book if it says nothing. Nitan, hom, La Sala and Royd publish theirs on their booking pages, and Black Ginger prints it on its dining page with a warning that entry may be declined. We found none on Catch Beach Club's homepage or dining page, and Phuket 101 says the club does not publish one, so a message before you go is the surest way to check.
Policies change, so ask for the date you are booking. Our guide to booking a Phuket restaurant in high season covers what else to ask at the same moment.
What is the weather like at a November to February dinner?
As of 10 July 2026, Phuket 101 expects the monsoon to end in November with a few showers still possible, so dress light for warm evenings, and bring a thin layer for air conditioning, which is our own advice. Phuket 101 (updated 10 July 2026) says the monsoon is ending in November with a few showers still possible, and that mid-December to February is peak season, with clear skies and "comfortable temperatures around 27-28°C" (the page does not say whether that is a daytime or an average figure). WeatherSpark, which uses the Phuket International Airport records, puts the average low in December, January and February at 74 to 75 degrees Fahrenheit, about 23 to 24 degrees Celsius, so evenings are warm. Allow for a passing shower in November.
Two sensible additions, and these are our advice and not a venue rule: choose breathable cotton or linen, and carry a light jacket or wrap, because air-conditioned rooms can feel cool after the walk in. A rainy evening calls for sturdier shoes, as our guide to a rainy-season evening in Phuket explains.
Mosquitoes. The US CDC (page reviewed 8 October 2026) lists Thailand's dengue risk as spread by mosquito bites and advises covering skin with long sleeves and trousers, using a repellent with at least 20% DEET, and staying in air-conditioned or screened rooms. The World Health Organization (fact sheet of 21 August 2025) says the mosquitoes that spread dengue are active during the day and recommends repellent and clothes that cover as much of the body as possible. Neither source speaks about dinner specifically, so this is our own advice: if you walk in at dusk, light trousers or a long dress and a repellent are a sensible choice, and they suit a smart casual outfit anyway.
What is the dress code at Bisou Phuket?
Bisou Phuket is smart casual with no flip-flops. A shirt or a nice top with trousers, or a dress, is a good place to start. The whole restaurant is indoors, so leave the beach at the beach.
